Testimonials and Endorsements Carole James Joan Russow David Turner and I have been working together since 1982, with a wide variety of issues and organizations, such as the Human Rights Coalition, Clean Air Car-Free Day, sewage treatment, stopping the destruction of the Walbran Valley, and opposing nuclear ships. During the last federal election I was the Leader of the Green Party of Canada, and ran against him in this riding. This election, I am voting for Turner and the revitalized NDP. I believe that Jack Layton and David Turner are effective and strong advocates for human rights, environment, peace and social justice. If progressive voters choose David Turner, he will be the next MP for Victoria. Abebe Teklu I am a blind immigrant student at the University of Victoria and have known David Turner since 1998. He is compassionate and understanding and a tireless worker. He has put me in touch with many helpful organizations and assisted my search for employment. David also works very hard for anti-racism and human rights. Without him, living in Victoria would have been very difficult for me. When I am in trouble, he has always helped me with valuable advice. I know David Turner will make an excellent Member of Parliament and will work endlessly to solve constituent’s issues. Denise Savoie "As former Mayor of Victoria, David Turner understands local environment, economic and social issues. We need David's integrity to ensure public health care is not dismantled and privatized." Dr. Saul Arbess David Turner is a man of the people, a social activist who believes
that the role of government is to protect and nourish our cherished public
institutions and to use resources in the interest of social justice. His
is an agenda of peace-building and a vigorous, participatory democracy
within a sovereign Canada. Some people are talking about voting Liberal
to keep the Conservatives out. I say we need all the progressive members
we can get in Ottawa who will offset the right-of-centre agendas of both
those parties. In a minority government context, the political left may

"We know that Canadians are ready for a fresh, honest approach to government - Jack Layton is the only leader who can do that. I believe that Victoria deserves to have an MP who is not afraid to stand up and fight for honesty and justice - a person of integrity and honour who will work with Jack in Ottawa to make a difference - David Turner will do just that."
"David Turner will be our voice in Ottawa to fight for better public Christine St. Peter "David Turner is an unusual politician: he understands equity. In his case, it's not just talk. We've had the opportunity in Victoria to watch him at work implementing his progressive principles. He understands what too few politicians seem to get— that the only way to build a safe, sound society for everyone is to be sure we all have access to social justice." Rose Henry “Over the past ten years David has demonstrated his willingness to address the social interest of our whole community, whether as Mayor, School Board Chair, or common citizen. He encourages his students at University, and community activists such as myself, to take a deeper interest in human rights issues both locally and globally. He has offered encouraging words of support to everyone who is within his realm to take an interest in our communities. It is because of people like David that each and everyone of us have benefited from public services.” Marge Reitsma-Street “To his candidacy, David Turner brings passionate commitment, seasoned by years of leadership promoting human rights, child care, equity for women, and community economic development.”
“David Turner has the history, the commitment, the integrity and the political experience and abilities necessary to be an outstanding Member of Parliament. David is precisely the kind of person that our party needs to once again become a viable political force in Canada, and I know he is the kind of public official and candidate the people of Victoria need, trust and will support as their representative in Ottawa. As Mayor of Victoria his legacy is enormous. David’s tenacity, his strength, compassion and perseverance, brought a new openness and better decision making in Victoria through real community consultation. He achieved those changes by holding the principles of our party first and foremost every step of the way. My ballot is for David Turner - Victoria’s NDP Candidate in the 2004 Federal election.” Norm Levi “I am supporting David Turner. Based on his past and present broad political experience, David will be an excellent MP and addition to Jack Layton's NDP Team.” Eric Hartley “I am very happy to endorse David as a person of integrity and progressive thinking, and also because I know David’s municipal record. David has a proven record of taking action on issues that have in fundamental ways contributed to building a better city and community for everyone in Victoria. As Mayor, David managed to address both the social and economic issues in a balance that I feel made Victoria a great place to live and do business. I believe that experience will make him a strong advocate in Ottawa for all of Victoria.” Alan & Leni Hoover “For 30 years we have known David Turner as a dedicated community activist. David has always been at the forefront in serving his neighbourhood and his city.” Carol Pickup “When I was his colleague on the School Board and CRD, we did some very progressive things, especially pay equity in the School district to ensure inside workers such as school secretaries (predominantly female) received wages for work of equal value to outside workers (predominantly male). David is a person of principles and high integrity, with a passion for social justice, who walks the talk.” Brenda Jordison “I have known David Turner for 32 years, and in that time he has always been involved in social justice issues. He is not just a politician, but someone who is focussed on the needs of people, and an advocate for human rights, pay equity, poverty issues, affordable housing, healthcare and the rights of workers. David will speak out, but more importantly he contributes to finding solutions.” Karen Potts “I have had the pleasure of working with David as a colleague for the past six years. I have come to know David as one of the few people who have the courage of their convictions; David acts on his ideals. David was one of few faculty who actively supported the unionization of sessional instructors under CUPE 4163. I have seen David personally sustain a student emergency fund with all the proceeds of his book, and with money from his own pocket. David is a principled academic and activist who is truly grounded in the community and on the streets. From his actions and commitments, David has earned the right to be nominated for the NDP in the Victoria riding. We can count on David for the long run.” Sarah Fraser While writing a textbook about social work and the law last year, David Turner devoted endless hours to managing the Vancouver Island Human Rights Coalition (where I did my practicum), and was an excellent teacher and role model. I have never met a man so dedicated to social justice issues. Just thinking about all the volunteer work he does makes me tired and I am half his age! I have always been extremely skeptical of my MP, as I never trust that they mean what they say, but this is one case where there need be no question. David is not only a man of his word, but he is a frontline worker who truly understands the importance of social services and the need for change. We need people like David in politics!! Mary Lowther “David Turner doesn’t just believe in social justice, fair play and looking out for his neighbour — he acts upon these beliefs. Without seeking accolades or rewards, he advocates tirelessly for social improvements, whether it is training social workers at UVic, working at the Ombudsman’s office, or supporting other candidates. People listen to David because he thinks for himself and follows through on his promises."
