Centre for Integral Economics

grizzly bearIn June 2003, Rycroft helped launch the Centre for Integral Economics' report on grizzly bear economics in British Columbia. Coverage was phenomenal across Canada, and particularly in BC. Print coverage included an excellent article on the editorial pages of the Globe & Mail, a front page in the Vancouver Sun, and several Canada Press/Broadcast News wire stories. As well, we received good coverage on CBC, CKNW, CKWX, C-FAX and CFMI radio stations, and favourable reports on BCTV, CBC TV (english and french), CTV and Global TV, which are available for viewing on VHS videocassette.

PureEdge Software Solutions

PureEdge News CoverageWhile working with PureEdge Solutions in 2002, Alan Rycroft placed many stories in US and Canada print and web publications, primarily in the computer press, but also in business outlets including Canada's National Post. Flashing at the right are other publications that ran his PureEdge stories. Links to the excellent coverage are also available. The Director of Marketing had this to say of Rycroft's performance: "“His accomplishments included: Creating, managing, and executing our media relations program from a zero impressions position to one in which we typically received over 900,000 impressions per quarter.”

Peace, Earth & Justice News

In 1996, Alan Rycroft founded the Peace, Earth & Justice News, which is a free daily email and web news service. He has been the Senior Editor ever since.

BC Ferries

Mr. Rycroft handled many "files" at BC Ferries from 1995 through 1998, managing media, government and internal communications for safety and environment, the northern services and Discovery Coast Passage, statistics, community relations, stakeholder processes and finance. The top story he managed was the opening up of Discovery Coast Passage, BC Ferries' only new route during the last two decades. Some of the more spectacular media coverage he obtained as a Communications Officer is outlined below.

BC Ferries Discovery Coast Passage

Centre for Education Information, Standards & Services

As a Communications Consultant to this government agency in 2001 and 2002, Mr. Rycroft was able to overcome a corporate culture shy of media exposure, and obtained eight positive articles monthly in newspapers across British Columbia, while doubling traffic on their web site. Below are a few of the articles he wrote and placed.

Education Outlook: The Next Ten Years, Editorial Feature, Times Colonist, March 5, 2001. Appeared also in many other BC newspapers.

Georgia Strait Marathon

Alan Rycroft coordinated a full-time staff of six, contractors and several hundred volunteers, to mount this ambitious fundraising marathon. Hundreds participated in the marathon using about 150 water craft, and many swimmers. The event had five venues. At Sechelt was registration, briefing, overnight camp and the morning launch. The marathoners then crossed Georgia Strait paddling and swimming to a Nanaimo beach landing. A music festival was held in a Nanaimo park en route to the weekend event 's conclusion with a second night of camping and a day of activities at Newcastle Island, off downtown Nanaimo.

Produced for the Third Annual Save the Strait Marathon in the summer 1992, our thirty-second commercial ran on several TV stations.

Nuclear Ships

Ridding Canada of nuclear ships has been a dream of Al Rycroft's since he arrived in Victoria in 1989. Below is a sampling of just a few of the early media stories and campaign strategies he has managed.

Nuclear Umbrella and Law, Asahi Shimbun (Japan's third-largest daily paper), March 13, 2001.

CHEK TV News, June 22, 1995, Lawsuit in Supreme Court of Canada. The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear our appeal of a decision to allow nuclear ships to continue entering Canadian waters.

CKNW, June 9, 1992, The World Tonight. Alan Rycroft is interviewed after a day of hearings for the VIP Society's lawsuit, suing the federal government for a public, environmental review of nuclear ship visits.

Municipal campaign, CH TV News (Rycroft as spokesperson). In 1990, I coordinated a campaign on behalf of the Victoria Peace Centre to gauge support for a public environmental review of nuclear ship visits. This CHEK story finds me at Oak Bay City Hall, arguing successfully in favour of the municipality calling for a review. The final campaign results were outstanding, and include:

  • Eight of ten municipal councils in favour, six unanimously.
  • All local Members of Parliament in favour.
  • Two Legislature votes of 51:1, made British Columbia a nuclear-weapons free zone, and formally requested the Federal Government to hold an environmental review.
