Young
adults, facilitated by the Internet, are building a new political
culture that is more fluid, decentralized, diverse, and global than
cultures of the past, which may move society beyond traditional
political oligarchies towards greater participatory democracy, flexible
coalitions and networks managing political affairs, and communication
and information processes that are more influential than in previous
generations.
Young adults are using the multi-faceted, online
media platform to inform themselves, discuss public policy, and organize
political activity. From texting and email, to chat rooms, discussion
boards, blogs, wikis, interactive web sites, and virtual worlds such as
Second Life, youth and young adults are building new local, regional,
national, and global, virtual public spheres with thriving democratic
debate and effective political organization.
As the Government of Canada prepares to release its Economic Statement
next week, we urge you to consider the important role of our federal
government in supporting Canadians through the work of Canada’s
charities and nonprofits in our communities and around the world,
particularly during periods of economic hardship. Over the past days
and weeks, Canadians have heard and read in the media that demands on
charitable organizations have begun to rise whiledonations may be
increasingly at risk in light of the diminished capacity of individual
and corporate donors to give.
Greenpeace’s Second Life
Is the Media Giant Missing the Virtual Boat?
Alan Rycroft - Second Life - There’s a new, slowly growing media out there – virtual
reality – and while Greenpeace has a beachhead, could they be missing
the boat? Or, as in ages past, is Greenpeace hot on the scene, scouting
out a new, virtual media opportunity to get out critical messages to
save the real planet Earth?
Sunshine Communications' associates have established a virtual office
and meeting space in Second Life on a beautiful, seaside mountain in Shubelik. The new, virtual world property includes the Canadian Art Gallery,
meeting rooms, some parkland and several places to have a small meeting.
Second Life is a popular virtual world where the "residents" create
their own environment. Clients are welcome to use the
Sunshine virtual facilities for any meetings they would like to hold.
Sunshine Communications also maintains a private, text-based chat area
elsewhere for client discussions.
